GPS-Tracked Vulture’s Journey from Tadoba to Tamil Nadu

In a remarkable display of wildlife conservation efforts, a white-rumped vulture fitted with a satellite tag at Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra has embarked on an epic journey spanning over 4,000 km to reach Tamil Nadu. The vulture’s expedition took it through various states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and finally Tamil Nadu, showcasing the bird’s adventurous spirit and curiosity.

Conservation Initiative Soars

The vulture, identified as N11, was part of the Jatayu conservation initiative led by the Forest Department of Maharashtra and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). The project involved GPS-tagging 10 endangered long-billed vultures brought from the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre in Pinjore, Haryana. These birds were carefully housed in pre-release aviaries at Pench Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve to prepare them for their eventual release into the wild.

Reviving Endangered Vulture Populations

The Jatayu Conservation Project, launched in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, aims to re-establish populations of critically endangered vultures in the region. Following a significant decline in vulture populations between 1990 and 2006 due to the use of the NSAID drug Diclofenac, conservation efforts have focused on breeding programs to revive these majestic birds. The recent release of 10 white-backed vultures and 10 long-billed vultures in Tadoba and Pench marks a crucial milestone in India’s ongoing vulture conservation journey.
