Thirteen lives were lost, while 99 individuals were rescued in the incident that took place on Wednesday. The Navy reported that a Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry en route from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist spot.

Arif Bamane, a driver of the Mumbai Port Trust pilot boat Poorva, recounted the harrowing scene, stating, “When we reached there, the situation was tragic and completely chaotic. People were screaming for help, and some were crying.” Bamane and his team swiftly prioritized rescuing women and children, managing to save around 20-25 individuals before naval boats arrived.
Iqbal Gothekar, a seasoned boat driver, shared his experience of being one of the first responders at the accident site. He described seeing people on the capsized boat frantically waving for help, a sight that he had never encountered in his career spanning nearly two decades.
The Rescue Efforts
Despite the chaos and heartbreak, these brave individuals worked tirelessly to rescue as many stranded passengers as possible. Gothekar’s boat alone rescued 16 people and safely transported them back to the Gateway of India.
