Upgrades for Matheran Toy Train to Ensure Monsoon Operations
Central Railway is gearing up to enhance the Neral-Matheran corridor for smoother operations during the monsoon season. A portion of the toy train route is typically closed off during the monsoon due to soil erosion caused by water flow along the hilly railway track. To address this issue, the Railways has allocated INR 5 crore for the construction of canals and dams at strategic locations along the 21 km long hill road.
Improvements in Drainage Infrastructure
The ongoing work includes clearing accumulated dirt on the tracks to prepare for the resumption of the toy train service after October 15. Central Railway officials are focusing on upgrading the drainage system on the Neral-Matheran line. This involves replacing short pipe bridges with RCC boxes and abutment slabs to ensure better water flow. Additionally, water channels will be constructed to facilitate the smooth discharge of water from the hill to the base of Matheran.
Enhanced Safety Measures
In a bid to enhance safety along the route, Central Railway plans to install anti-crash barriers and repair damaged ones to prevent accidents. These barriers have proven crucial in preventing derailments and other serious incidents on the Neral-Matheran line. Anti-corrosive paint will also be applied to extend the lifespan of these safety features. The entire project, including drainage improvements and safety enhancements, is estimated to cost around 5 crore rupees.
Engineers are currently utilizing JCB machines to remove soil buildup on the tracks, a necessary step to ensure the smooth operation of the toy train service. Over the years, Central Railway has undertaken various initiatives such as fencing the walls, replacing wooden sleepers with concrete, and strengthening the tracks to enhance overall safety and efficiency.
Earlier this monsoon, passenger services on the Neral-Aman lodge section were temporarily suspended from June 8 to October 15 due to security concerns. The upcoming upgrades aim to mitigate such issues and provide a more reliable and secure travel experience for passengers on the iconic Matheran toy train.
As the project progresses, Central Railway remains committed to ensuring the preservation and efficient operation of this historic railway line. The improvements being made will not only enhance the safety and reliability of the Neral-Matheran corridor but also contribute to the overall experience for tourists and locals alike. With the allocated funds and ongoing efforts, the toy train route is set to be better equipped to withstand the challenges posed by the monsoon season and continue serving as a beloved attraction for years to come.
