The transgender community in Maharashtra is questioning why they have been excluded from the “Ladki Bahin Yojana” scheme, which aims to make women economically independent. Despite assurances from the Chief Minister, they have not received any benefits from the scheme. Neeta Kene from Kinnar Asmita Foundation expressed her concerns, stating that transgender individuals face difficulties in obtaining essential documents like Aadhaar and PAN cards, which are required to access government schemes.
Dr. Pawan Yadav, a trans advocate, emphasized the importance of including the transgender community in the scheme and suggested reserving a seat in the state Assembly for transgender representatives. The Maharashtra Transgender Welfare Board, although established, has been inactive for months, depriving the community of potential benefits. Dr. Yadav highlighted the challenges faced by transgender individuals in finding housing and seeking help from authorities.
In Virar, a group of transgenders exercised their democratic rights by voting in the elections, hoping for a better lifestyle. Alia Pawar, a computer operator at Vasai Tahsildar office, shared her experience of struggle and emphasized the need for societal change in the treatment of transgender individuals. Despite working hard to improve their lives, the community still faces discrimination and challenges in accessing basic amenities.
The transgender community’s efforts to participate in the democratic process reflect their desire for a more inclusive society that recognizes their rights and provides opportunities for growth and development. By raising their voices and advocating for their inclusion in government schemes, they are taking important steps towards achieving economic independence and social acceptance. It is crucial for policymakers and society as a whole to address the needs and concerns of the transgender community to ensure a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
