The Maharashtra state home department has recently approved the establishment of an independent police station in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai. This decision came after a proposal was submitted by the Director General of Police on August 12, 2024, emphasizing the necessity for a separate police station in the area. The proposal highlighted the population growth due to ongoing large-scale construction projects and major developments, estimating an increase of around 160,000 residents which could lead to a rise in crime rates.
With the upcoming opening of the Atal Setu bridge and the coastal road connecting Shivaji Nagar to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), there is an expected significant increase in traffic flow in the region. Currently, the jurisdiction of the Ulwe police station covers areas handled by the NRI coastal police, Nhava Sheva police, and Panvel city police, creating challenges for both residents and law enforcement agencies. An official mentioned that the area’s rapid development necessitates the presence of an independent police station solely dedicated to serving the local community. The overlapping jurisdictions of three different police stations were causing issues with tasks such as passport verification and character certificate issuance.
The Government Resolution (GR) authorizing the establishment of the new police station also empowers the police department to define the station’s jurisdiction. This means that the department will determine the specific area limits for the new station based on the needs of the community. While the GR approves the creation of the new station, it specifies that the required staff must be sourced from the existing workforce within the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate, which currently oversees 20 police stations in the region.
In preparation for the establishment of the new police station, officials are working towards organizing a ground-breaking ceremony at a designated plot in Ulwe’s sector 10, provided by CIDCO. An officer mentioned that the ceremony is likely to take place before the implementation of the code of conduct. This initiative aims to streamline law enforcement efforts and enhance security measures in response to the area’s rapid growth and development.
The approval for the independent police station in Ulwe signifies a proactive step by the state government to address the evolving needs of the community and ensure effective law enforcement services tailored to the area’s unique requirements. By establishing a dedicated police station, authorities seek to improve public safety, facilitate smoother administrative processes, and enhance overall security in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai.
