TISS Revokes Ban on Progressive Students’ Forum and Revises Honour Code
In a significant move towards promoting a respectful and inclusive environment, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai has lifted the month-long ban on the Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF), a left-wing student group. This decision, announced on 16 September through an official order issued by the Registrar, marks a shift in the institution’s approach towards student activism and freedom of expression.
The ban on the PSF was initially imposed following the suspension of PSF leader and PhD scholar Ramadas Prini Sivanadan, who had been involved in protests. The suspension of Sivanadan, a Dalit scholar from Wayanad, Kerala, for two years had sparked controversy and led to legal challenges in the Bombay High Court. The lifting of the ban on the PSF signifies a willingness on the part of TISS to engage with diverse perspectives and uphold the values of mutual respect, unity, and academic integrity on its campuses.
Revised Honour Code and Commitment to Inclusivity
In addition to revoking the ban on the PSF, TISS has also taken steps to address concerns raised by student groups and rights activists regarding its Honour Code. The original Honour Code, introduced earlier this year, had come under fire for its restrictive measures that hindered student political activities. The code explicitly prohibited “anti-establishment” demonstrations and “unpatriotic discussions”, with violations carrying severe consequences, including expulsion.
However, in response to the backlash, TISS has revised the Honour Code to align more closely with principles of inclusivity and free expression. The updated code now aims to create a space for positive engagement and academic growth, emphasizing the importance of respecting diverse viewpoints and fostering a culture of dialogue and debate on campus.
