In a dramatic turn of events, a fishing boat sank off the coast of Madh Koliwada in Mumbai’s Malad area in the early hours of Sunday after being hit by a cargo ship. Despite the terrifying ordeal, there were no reports of injuries to anyone on board, as confirmed by a police officer to news agency PTI.

Rescue Operation

The police officer revealed that a group of eight other vessels in the area quickly sprang into action to retrieve the sinking boat. Thanks to their swift response, the vessel was brought safely to shore. The boat, belonging to Madh Koliwada resident Hemdeep Harishchandra Tipri, was hit by the cargo ship but was successfully retrieved by a local rescue group called Savati. Fortunately, all occupants on the boat escaped unharmed, with a sailor being rescued by the crew on the Savati boats.

Navy and Coast Guard Assistance

In a commendable display of teamwork and coordination, Navy and Coast Guard personnel also joined the rescue operation, further ensuring the safety of those involved. Their expertise and resources were instrumental in managing the situation effectively and preventing any casualties.

Meanwhile, tragedy struck elsewhere off the Mumbai coast recently, as a Navy craft collided with the passenger ferry ‘Neel Kamal,’ resulting in the loss of 14 lives, including Navy personnel and contractual naval employees. The Navy chief, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

As investigations into the incident unfold, a Board of Inquiry has been initiated by the Navy to establish the facts surrounding the collision. Additionally, the Mumbai police have registered a case against the Navy craft driver at the Colaba police station, indicating a thorough examination of the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
