Mumbai experienced heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning on Thursday night, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city. The IMD Mumbai warned of moderate spells of rain in isolated areas of Mumbai over the next 3-4 hours.
As of 9 pm on Thursday, Mumbai city received 5.29 mm of rainfall, with the eastern and western suburbs recording 3.87mm and 0.01mm of rainfall, respectively. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken preventive measures by pumping water at Andheri, Malad, Dahisar, and Mankhurd subways to prevent waterlogging. Traffic in these areas has not been affected, and overall traffic and train services are operating smoothly.
The water level in the Mithi river has reached 0.73 meters, posing no immediate threat of flooding. While no house collapses have been reported, the BMC mentioned three incidents of tree branch collapses, with two in the western suburbs and one in the eastern suburbs. Additionally, three incidents of short circuits were reported.
Looking ahead to Friday, October 11, the IMD has forecasted a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms. The weather agency also predicts light rains during the weekend. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In a previous update, the IMD issued a yellow alert for various districts in Maharashtra, including Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, and Satara. The weather department predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to occur in Nashik, Thane, Sangli, and Kolhapur.
