Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has accused the ruling Mahayuti of using police machinery against the opposition’s candidates in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024. He specifically called for the removal of state DGP Rashmi Shukla, stating that the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is resorting to attacks on Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidates. Raut claimed that the ruling party is issuing threats and using police pressure to intimidate opposition candidates out of fear of losing the elections.
Raut highlighted an incident where Sena (UBT) leader Advay Hire was attacked in the Malegaon Outer constituency in Nashik by alleged “goons” of Sena minister and candidate Dada Bhuse. Despite the attack, no action has been taken by the police, indicating a misuse of police machinery to carry out attacks, according to Raut.
The opposition has been demanding the removal of IPS officer Rashmi Shukla as the state Director General of Police (DGP). Raut emphasized the need for Shukla to be replaced to ensure fair and unbiased policing during the elections.
Amidst claims on seats among the MVA allies, Raut mentioned that the Sena (UBT) will be contesting in the Miraj and Solapur South constituencies. Additionally, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has filed nominations in areas where the Sena (UBT) has also fielded candidates. Raut also expressed willingness to give two to three seats to the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) in Raigad.
The Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 are scheduled for November 20, with the counting of votes set to take place three days later. Nomination forms are being accepted until 3 pm on Tuesday, providing candidates with the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
The allegations of the Mahayuti misusing police machinery against opposition candidates have raised concerns about the fairness and integrity of the electoral process. As the election date approaches, it is crucial for authorities to address these allegations and ensure a level playing field for all candidates and political parties involved. The outcome of the Maharashtra assembly elections will have a significant impact on the state’s political landscape, making it essential for the electoral process to be conducted transparently and impartially.
