Ratan Tata’s passion for animals shines through in his final project, the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai. The hospital, which cost ₹165 crores, is the first of its kind in the country and offers state-of-the-art facilities, including 24×7 emergency care, ICUs, HDUs, advanced diagnostic imaging services, surgery units, specialty treatments, and more. Tata’s personal experience of having to fly his dog to the University of Minnesota for treatment inspired him to create a top-notch healthcare facility for pets in India.

The hospital, located in Mahalaxmi, opened its doors on July 1 and has been running successfully ever since. Dr. Thomas Heathcote, the chief veterinary officer and CEO of the Advanced Veterinary Care Foundation (AVCF), expressed his excitement about the hospital, calling it a groundbreaking project that will cater to thousands of animals in need. The hospital is operated by the AVCF with support from the Tata Trusts.

In addition to providing healthcare services for pets, the hospital also has plans for a connected annexe that will focus on sterilization and treatment of stray dogs, in collaboration with the NGO Welfare of Stray Dogs. This initiative is still in progress, with more developments expected in the future. Phase 2 of the hospital will include specialized surgeries, physiotherapy, and advanced oncology treatments.

The hospital has already received positive feedback from pet owners, with many praising the expertise and kindness of the staff. Actor Shilpa Shetty shared her gratitude for the hospital after her dog underwent surgery there, highlighting the quick intervention and aftercare services provided by the doctors and staff. The hospital has been described as a “godsend” for emergency animal healthcare in Mumbai.

Ratan Tata’s vision for the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai is a testament to his dedication to animal welfare. The hospital not only provides top-notch medical care for pets but also serves as a hub for promoting animal health and well-being in the city. With plans for expansion and further developments in the future, the hospital is set to become a leading institution in the field of veterinary care in India.
