The Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently announced that light motor vehicles will be exempt from toll taxes at five entry points in Mumbai. This decision is aimed at reducing traffic congestion at toll booths and will be effective from midnight on October 14. The move is expected to provide relief to commuters during the festive season and ease traffic on key roads leading up to the toll points.

The toll exemption applies to light motor vehicles such as cars, jeeps, vans, auto-rickshaws, taxis, delivery vans, and small trucks. Previously, these vehicles had to pay between ₹45 to ₹75 at the toll booths, depending on the location. With over six lakh vehicles crossing these toll points daily, this new rule is expected to save time, fuel, and reduce pollution, as 80 percent of these vehicles are light motor vehicles.

However, the toll waiver has faced criticism from the opposition Shiv Sena party, with MP Priyanka Chaturvedi calling it a “desperate measure” ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls. Despite the criticism, the government has defended the decision as part of a series of over 150 measures taken in recent cabinet meetings to address various issues in the state.

In addition to light motor vehicles, heavy vehicles exceeding 7,500 kg in gross weight, including trucks, trailers, tankers, and other goods carriers, will still be required to pay toll taxes at these entry points. Out of the total vehicles passing through these toll booths, around 70,000 are heavy vehicles. The exemption for light motor vehicles is part of the government’s efforts to streamline traffic flow and improve overall transportation efficiency in the city.

The toll waiver is expected to have a significant impact on commuters and businesses relying on these entry points. It will not only reduce travel costs for individuals but also contribute to a smoother traffic flow and reduced environmental impact. As the government continues to implement measures to address transportation challenges in Mumbai, it is crucial for all stakeholders to cooperate and support initiatives that aim to enhance the overall commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.
