In a recent development, Mumbai’s Regional Transport Offices (RTO) have launched a crackdown on over-speeding vehicles along the newly constructed coastal road. Flying squads have taken action against nearly 600 vehicles for exceeding speed limits during a special drive that commenced on February 13, officials reported on Tuesday.
The Crackdown on Coastal Road Speeding
According to a senior RTO official, the flying squads, stationed along the 10-kilometer-long coastal road between Marine Drive and Worli, have issued e-challans to 596 vehicles found to be over-speeding. The Tardeo RTO, responsible for overseeing the island city of Mumbai, issued 300 e-challans, while the Wadala RTO, in charge of the eastern suburbs, issued the remaining 296.
Most of the vehicles caught over-speeding were high-end cars, including popular brands such as Mercedes, Audi, and BMW. Under the law, over-speeding is considered a compoundable offence, necessitating vehicle owners to pay a ₹2,000 compounding fee, which can be conveniently settled online.
This enforcement action is part of a collaborative special drive initiated by the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department and the Mumbai Traffic Police to combat illegal racing and ensure compliance with traffic regulations on the coastal road. To monitor and deter rash driving, racing, and other violations, four squads have been strategically positioned at key entry and exit points.
Concerns and Consequences
The 10-kilometer coastal road, gradually opened in phases since March 12, 2024, has witnessed a significant influx of vehicles, with over 50 lakh vehicles recorded and a daily average ranging from 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles, as reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The rise in traffic volume has raised concerns about safety, particularly following a recent racing incident that resulted in the suspension of two drivers’ licenses and the seizure of their vehicles after a collision in one of the tunnels along the coastal road.
The aftermath of the incident not only caused a traffic jam but also highlighted broader issues related to illegal racing and noise pollution, stemming from excessive honking and loud exhaust systems. These challenges underscore the importance of strict enforcement measures to maintain order and safety on Mumbai’s roadways.
