The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has announced its candidate for the Mahim constituency in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024. Amit Thackeray, the son of party chief Raj Thackeray, will be making his debut as a candidate in these elections. This decision was announced by the party on Tuesday, along with the release of a list of candidates for the upcoming polls.
In addition to nominating Amit Thackeray, the MNS has also revealed candidates for 45 constituencies in Mumbai, as well as for Thane, MMR, and other parts of Maharashtra. Among the candidates announced, MNS spokesperson and former corporator Sandeep Deshpande will be contesting from Worli.
It is important to note that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will be contesting the elections independently, without being part of any alliance. Although the party had supported Mahayuti in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, they have decided to go solo for the upcoming Assembly polls.
Raj Thackeray, the party chief, aims to increase the number of elected representatives in order to become a significant player in the political landscape. The MNS had 13 MLAs in 2009 when they first contested independently, but currently, they only have one legislator in the outgoing House.
In Mahim, the MNS had a legislator in 2009 and has been a runner-up in the following two elections. The party will be contesting against undivided Sena’s nominee Sada Sarvankar, who later shifted his allegiance to Shiv Sena (Shinde) after the party split in 2022.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on November 20, with the counting of votes set for three days later on November 23. The term of the current Maharashtra Assembly will end on November 26. The Election Commission has specified that the last date for submission of nomination forms is October 29, with scrutiny scheduled for October 30. Candidates will have until November 11 to withdraw their nominations.
Overall, the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024 are poised to be a significant political event, with various parties and candidates vying for a chance to represent the people of Maharashtra in the state legislature. The MNS’s decision to nominate Amit Thackeray and field candidates across multiple constituencies reflects their commitment to contesting the elections independently and making their mark in the political landscape. It will be interesting to see how the election unfolds and what the results will mean for the future of Maharashtra’s governance.
