The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to give a contractor a three-year ban for mixing debris with nullah silt. The BMC also plans to file a police case against the contractor. The contractor, who was in charge of cleaning roadside drains and culverts along Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway, was found to be mixing debris with silt using Artificial Intelligence technology. This contractor, Bhoomika Transport, had been awarded the contract for drain cleaning work in the M West ward, covering areas like Chembur and Tilak Nagar.
Complaints were received by the Storm Water Drains Department during the cleaning work, alleging that the contractor was adding debris to the silt to increase its weight. A video showing the contractor’s vehicle registration number was also submitted as evidence. Following an investigation using Artificial Intelligence, BMC confirmed that the contractor was indeed transporting debris-mixed silt. A show-cause notice was issued to the contractor on April 28, but the explanations provided by the contractor on April 30 and May 7 were deemed unsatisfactory.
It was discovered that the contractor had intentionally neglected the work, leading to financial fraud against the BMC. As a result, the BMC has decided to involve the police in the matter and file a case against the contractor. Bhoomika Transport has been blacklisted for three years, and their engineering registration with the BMC has been canceled under Clause 7.3.6 of the Registered Contractor Rules 2016.
