Mahaparinirvan Diwas, a day to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, is being observed today, December 6, across Maharashtra. This significant day has been marked as a local holiday by the Maharashtra government to pay homage to the iconic leader.

Tribute to Dr. BR Ambedkar

Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde kickstarted the commemoration by garlanding Ambedkar’s statue in Thane’s Court Naka area. The 69th Mahaparinirvan Diwas will also be remembered at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex. The event, organized by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation under the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, will be a heartfelt tribute to the revered leader.

Floral Tributes and Special Trains

The commemoration will begin with floral tributes from Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh, and other dignitaries. This tradition signifies the respect and admiration that Dr. Ambedkar commands even today.

Each year, thousands of individuals from all walks of life in Maharashtra converge in Mumbai to honor Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar’s Shivaji Park, where he was laid to rest. To accommodate the increased passenger traffic, special trains are being arranged by the Railways for the convenience of those paying their respects.

Holiday Closures and Traffic Restrictions

On this occasion, certain adjustments have been made in the functioning of institutions. State and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburbs will remain closed, as will liquor shops, since it has been declared a dry day. However, public and private banks will operate as usual, and schools in Mumbai will be shut in observance of this solemn day.

To ensure the safety and smooth movement of the public, the traffic police in Mumbai have put restrictions in place from December 5 to 7. Some roads have been closed, and diversions have been set up to manage the expected crowd at Chaityabhoomi in Shivaji Park.

As we commemorate Mahaparinirvan Diwas, let us reflect on the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and his invaluable contributions to the nation. This day serves as a reminder of his vision for a just and inclusive society, inspiring us to uphold his principles of equality and empowerment for all.

Let us honor his memory not just today but every day by striving to build a better and more equitable future for all individuals, irrespective of their background or circumstances. Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings continue to guide us in our journey towards a more just and compassionate society.
