The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) recently underwent a thorough review covering the period from 2018 to 2022. This review was conducted in two phases to assess the institution’s progress and provide guidance for future growth. Based on the feedback received from the review committee, IIT Bombay is now in the process of developing a strategic plan for the next five years, with a long-term vision set for 2047.

The first phase of the review took place in 2023, where external committees reviewed individual academic units. The second phase occurred from February 21 to 23, 2024, with a distinguished committee of experts from India and abroad conducting a broader assessment. During their visit to the campus, the committee engaged with faculty, students, staff, and alumni, and visited various facilities and startups within the institute. Their observations and recommendations highlighted IIT Bombay’s excellence in education, research, and innovation.

One of the key highlights of the review was the recognition of IIT Bombay’s significant contributions to technological advancements, such as CAR-T Cell Therapy. This breakthrough, dedicated to the nation by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, demonstrates the institute’s leadership in cutting-edge research.

The review committee also praised IIT Bombay’s growth over the past five years, including increased student enrollment, graduation rates, and achievements in niche academic areas. The institute’s focus on high-quality research publications, funded projects, and initiatives like Technology Innovation Hubs and Research Park were noted, with support from the global alumni network.

Furthermore, the committee commended IIT Bombay’s efforts in faculty recruitment, especially in increasing representation from reserved categories. Special recruitment drives have been launched to promote inclusivity and socio-economic equity, with the recruitment of Postdoctoral Fellows from reserved categories highlighted as a key initiative.

Looking ahead, IIT Bombay aims to strengthen its collaborations with industry to translate research into real-world applications and address industrial challenges. Entrepreneurial activities, including student-led startups, are seen as vital for future growth and creating employment opportunities.

With a goal to rank among the top 50 institutions worldwide, IIT Bombay is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, infrastructure development, and fostering connections between academia, industry, and society. The institute’s response to the review committee’s recommendations will play a crucial role in shaping its future and maintaining its position as a global leader in higher education.
