Chaos on the Streets: Mumbai Traffic Police Crack Down on Violators During Janmashtami
The streets of Mumbai were buzzing with activity on Tuesday, August 27, as the city celebrated the festival of Janmashtami. However, amidst the festivities, the Mumbai traffic police were hard at work cracking down on motorists who were violating various traffic norms. Over 13,000 motorists found themselves on the wrong side of the law as they were penalised for a range of offenses, resulting in fines totaling over INR 1.05 crore.
Violations Galore: A Breakdown of the Offenses
According to data released by the traffic police, a significant number of motorists were fined for riding without helmets. In total, 2,791 individuals were penalised for this offense, highlighting the importance of road safety measures. Additionally, around a thousand motorists were caught jumping signals, endangering not only their own lives but also the lives of others on the road.
One of the most common violations observed by the traffic police was the practice of triple seat riding. A total of 290 riders were booked for this offense, which not only poses a risk to the riders themselves but also adds to the congestion on the city’s already crowded streets. Furthermore, 3,185 people were penalised for causing inconvenience to others by parking and abandoning their vehicles in public places, leading to traffic bottlenecks and chaos.
Enforcement Measures: Upholding the Law on Mumbai’s Roads
To ensure the smooth movement of vehicles across the city, the Mumbai traffic police deployed about 2300 personnel in the traffic department on the day of Janmashtami. Each division was equipped with two to three challan machines to expedite the process of issuing fines to violators. Special squads were also deployed to monitor and crack down on violations, ensuring that motorists adhered to traffic rules and regulations.
In addition to the aforementioned offenses, the traffic police also fined 1,221 individuals for refusing to ply passengers and 339 drivers for ferrying more passengers than permitted. These violations not only disrupt the flow of traffic but also pose a safety hazard to both passengers and other road users. Moreover, 85 motorists were fined for not following the orders given by police officials, emphasizing the importance of obeying instructions to maintain order on the roads.
