Officials in Mumbai’s Colaba are working hard to increase voter turnout for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls on November 20. The Chief Election Commissioner expressed concern over low voter turnout in urban areas, including Colaba, during the 2019 state polls. To address this issue, the Election Commission has decided to hold voting on a Wednesday to discourage voters from going on vacation if it falls on a weekend.

In an effort to boost voter participation, Mumbai City Collector Sanjay Yadav shared that they have identified polling booths with historically low turnout and have created an action plan tailored to each location. They are collaborating with civil society members, housing society representatives, and booth-level assistants in Colaba to encourage electors to vote. Additionally, they are reaching out to defense officers in the area to urge their staff to participate in the electoral process.

With 2,64,931 voters in the Colaba constituency, officials are optimistic about increasing voter turnout to match national and state averages. The Election Commission has been actively working to raise voter awareness and address urban apathy in cities like Mumbai and Pune. By engaging with local communities and implementing targeted strategies, they hope to see a significant improvement in voter participation in Colaba.
