Despite heavy rainfall in various parts of India, the water levels in the country’s main reservoirs are still below last year’s average. However, the current levels are higher than the average of the past decade. This information comes from official data provided by the Central Water Commission.

The 150 main reservoirs in India have a total live storage capacity of 178.784 billion cubic meters, which is about 69.35% of the total capacity created nationwide. Currently, these reservoirs hold 91.496 BCM of water, which is 51% of their total capacity. This represents 94% of the storage levels from the same period last year and 107% of the normal storage levels based on the average of the past decade.

In comparison to the previous week, the live storage available in these reservoirs has increased. However, it remains lower than the levels recorded during the same period last year and the normal storage levels. This pattern is seen across different regions of the country.

In the northern region, which includes states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan, the reservoirs are currently at 33% of their total capacity. This is significantly lower than last year’s levels but has improved from the previous week. Similarly, in the eastern region comprising states like Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, the reservoirs are at 34% of their total capacity, showing an increase from the previous week.

In the western region, including states like Gujarat and Maharashtra, the reservoirs are currently at 53% of their total capacity. This is a decrease from last year’s levels but an improvement from the previous week. The central region, which includes states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, is at 48% of its total capacity, showing an increase from the previous week.

The southern region, covering states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, has reservoirs at 66% of their total capacity. This is higher than last year’s levels and an increase from the previous week. Some states have shown improved storage levels compared to last year, while others have reported lower levels.

Overall, the variations in water storage levels across different regions of the country reflect both positive and concerning trends. Despite the heavy rainfall, the water levels in the main reservoirs continue to be a point of interest and monitoring for officials and experts in the field.
