Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss various issues concerning the state. During their meeting, Stalin sought the early release of pending funds for the Chennai metro project, as well as for integrated education initiatives and the protection of Tamil fishermen.
Stalin described the meeting with the Prime Minister as “purposeful” and presented a detailed report on the three main issues at hand. He emphasized the importance of the speedy release of funds for the Chennai metro project, noting that Rs 18,544 crore had already been spent on the project. The delay in the disbursement of pending dues has hindered progress on the second phase of the Chennai metro, and Stalin urged for quick action to address this issue.
In addition to the metro project, Stalin also raised concerns about the integrated education initiative in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted the hold-up in the first installment of the 60:40 Centre-State funded program and discussed the incorporation of positive elements of the National Education Policy while rejecting the trilingual policy. Stalin requested a correction in the MoU to explicitly state that there will be no language imposition in the state’s education system.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister addressed the plight of Tamil fishermen who have been facing arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin requested Modi’s personal intervention in the matter, pointing out that 191 fishing boats and 145 fishermen have been captured by the Sri Lankan authorities. He sought a resolution of the issue at the upcoming India-Sri Lanka joint committee meeting in Colombo.
Following his meeting with Modi, Stalin stated that the Prime Minister had assured him of considering all three demands. He then proceeded to meet with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the family of CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, who recently passed away. Stalin’s visit to the national capital was met with a warm welcome from DMK leaders and members of Parliament.
Overall, the discussions between Stalin and Modi highlighted the importance of addressing key issues facing Tamil Nadu, including the timely release of funds for infrastructure projects, education initiatives, and the protection of fishermen. The Chief Minister’s proactive approach in advocating for the state’s interests demonstrates his commitment to addressing the needs of Tamil Nadu’s residents and industries.
