The heavy pre-monsoon showers that pounded Mumbai this week have triggered the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) into action. The organization is now working diligently on implementing measures along the metro areas in the city to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience for all citizens ahead of the rainy season. Safety is a top priority for the MMRDA as they gear up for the monsoon, with a focus on preventing any mishaps that could result in loss of life.
The removal of 88% of barricades from completed stretches along the metro areas is a key step taken by the MMRDA to facilitate the flow of water into the storm drains. Barricade board bottoms are being sealed in areas where work is still in progress to prevent any waterlogging issues. Additionally, dewatering pumps are being mobilized to drain water in case of heavy rainfall. An emergency response team, equipped with an engineer and 10 laborers, is being set up to address any complaints, with a disaster control room operating round-the-clock.
The MMRDA is also focusing on fixing potholes and testing electrical equipment to eliminate any potential hazards. Special planning authority areas like the Bandra Kurla Complex, Wadala Truck Terminus, and Oshiwara District Centre are undergoing desilting of major drains, stormwater drain cleaning, and tree trimmings to enhance safety measures. The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation, a subsidiary of the MMRDA, is working in tandem to prepare for the monsoon. An advanced monsoon control room will be established to monitor metro stations 24/7, with increased service frequency during floods. Project-specific nodal officers are being appointed, and all operational trains are undergoing water testing to ensure a leak-free commute.
With all these precautionary measures in place, the MMRDA is committed to implementing similar safety protocols across all nine under-construction metro lines. The organization is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and convenience of commuters as the monsoon season approaches.
