Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Set to Drastically Reduce Mumbai-Pune Expressway Traffic
In an effort to alleviate the heavy traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced plans for the construction of a 14-lane road near the Atal Setu sea bridge, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. This new road will not only ease congestion on the expressway but will also provide a vital connection to Pune via a ring road and onwards to Bengaluru.
During an alumni event organized by COEP Technological University, Nitin Gadkari highlighted the importance of this new infrastructure project. He stated, “There is huge traffic on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. A 14-lane road will be built near Atal Setu, which will further connect to Pune via a ring road and then onwards to Bengaluru. This road will bring down traffic on Mumbai-Pune Expressway by 50 per cent.”
The Atal Setu sea bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, is the country’s longest sea bridge and plays a crucial role in connecting Sewri in Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. With the addition of the new 14-lane road near the bridge, commuters can expect a significant reduction in travel time and congestion along this important route.
Furthermore, Gadkari emphasized the need for innovative and sustainable solutions in the transportation sector. He mentioned that India is ranked third in the world in the automobile sector and predicted that in the next 25 years, all vehicles will run on electricity rather than fossil fuels. The minister also highlighted the use of recycled materials, such as garbage, in road construction, stating that around 80 lakh tonnes of garbage have already been utilized in building new roads.
As part of the government’s Atmanirbhar (self-reliance) initiative, Gadkari emphasized the importance of improving the standard of living for farmers and focusing on developing “smart villages” rather than just smart cities. He stressed that self-reliance can only be achieved when all sections of society, including farmers, have access to better opportunities and resources.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, with its strategic location and connectivity, is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the transportation network in the region. By providing a faster and more efficient route between Mumbai and Pune, as well as onward to Bengaluru, this infrastructure project will not only reduce traffic congestion but also boost economic growth and connectivity in the area.
In conclusion, the development of the 14-lane road near the Atal Setu sea bridge is a significant step towards improving transportation infrastructure in the region. With the promise of reducing traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by 50 per cent, this project will have far-reaching benefits for commuters, businesses, and the overall economy. As India continues to focus on sustainable and innovative solutions in the transportation sector, projects like the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will play a vital role in shaping the future of infrastructure development in the country.
