The father of Akshay Shinde, who was accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case and killed by the police in ‘retaliatory firing’, has taken his grievances to the Bombay High Court. In a petition filed through his advocate, Amit Katarnaware, he is seeking a probe by a special investigation team into the death of his 24-year-old son. The father, Anna Shinde, alleges that his son was a victim of a “fake encounter” and is demanding that the court monitor the investigation closely.
The petition filed by Shinde’s father will be heard by a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday. The case has sparked controversy as Shinde was accused of sexually assaulting two girls at a school in Badlapur, Thane district. He was arrested on August 17 and was being transported from Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai to Badlapur when the incident leading to his death occurred.
According to the police, Shinde was killed near Mumbra bypass after allegedly attempting to snatch a gun from a policeman in the escort team. He then reportedly shot and injured an assistant inspector of police, leading to another officer firing at him. Shinde was declared dead at the Kalwa civil hospital following the incident.
The Maharashtra government has announced that the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) will conduct a probe into Shinde’s death. The case has raised questions about the use of force by the police and the circumstances surrounding Shinde’s death.
The father’s plea for a special investigation team to look into the matter highlights the challenges to the police’s claims regarding the encounter. The demand for a transparent and thorough investigation is crucial in ensuring justice and accountability in this case.
