Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is currently serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail for raping a minor, has been brought to a medical facility in Khopoli, Maharashtra’s Raigad district, for treatment of a heart-related ailment. Asaram, 83, was arrested in September 2013 and has been under police custody since then.
Asaram was taken to the multidisciplinary cardiac care clinic of an Ayurvedic hospital in Khopoli, which is located 70 km from Mumbai. He arrived at the hospital around 8 pm on Tuesday under full police protection. The decision to transfer him to this medical facility was made due to his deteriorating health condition, specifically related to his heart.
The Rajasthan High Court granted Asaram permission to undergo treatment at the Ayurvedic hospital in Maharashtra under police custody. As per the court’s orders, four policemen accompanied him during the transfer from Jodhpur to Mumbai. Additionally, he was allowed to have two attendants with him for support.
Raigad police personnel have been deployed at the hospital to ensure security and safety during Asaram’s treatment. He is expected to receive medical care at the facility for the next seven days. The Rajasthan High Court had imposed certain conditions for granting him parole, including the presence of police officers and attendants to monitor his movements.
Despite his pleas for suspension of sentence on health grounds, both the high court and the Supreme Court rejected Asaram’s requests. In March of this year, the Supreme Court declined to entertain his plea for suspension of the sentence due to his worsening health condition. Asaram was convicted in a rape case in 2013, and subsequently, he was also found guilty in a sexual assault case in 2023.
The decision to transfer Asaram to the medical facility in Khopoli comes as a result of his declining health and the need for specialized treatment for his heart-related ailment. The authorities are ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to provide him with the care he requires during his stay at the hospital.
Asaram Bapu’s health condition will be closely monitored by medical professionals at the hospital, and he will undergo treatment as prescribed by the doctors. The support of police officers and attendants will ensure that he receives the necessary care and attention throughout his time at the medical facility.
Overall, the decision to transfer Asaram Bapu to the hospital in Raigad for treatment of his heart-related ailment reflects the authorities’ commitment to providing him with appropriate medical care while upholding the law and ensuring public safety. Asaram’s health will continue to be a priority, and he will receive the necessary treatment and support during his time at the medical facility.
