Heavy rain on the horizon for Mumbai until Saturday
Get your umbrellas ready, folks! Mumbai is in for a wet and wild ride with more rain expected until Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city, indicating that we can expect some light to moderate rainfall in the coming days.
What’s causing all this rain, you ask? Well, according to the IMD forecast, a cyclonic circulation from north Karnataka to the Goa coastline in the Arabian Sea has created a low-pressure zone in the area. This low-pressure zone is expected to intensify and may even move further north, bringing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40kmph to north Maharashtra, the ghats of Maharashtra, and the Konkan region.
Rainfall stats and alerts
As of 8:30 am on Wednesday, the Santacruz weather station recorded 62mm of rainfall, while the Colaba weather station recorded 23mm. However, the city remained dry for the rest of the day. Neighboring districts like Thane and Palghar are also on alert, with Thane under a similar yellow alert and Palghar under an orange alert until Friday. The orange alert for Palghar indicates the possibility of ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’, thunderstorms, and lightning, along with gusty winds at speeds of 50-60 kmph at isolated places.
Temperature and humidity
On Wednesday, the maximum temperature recorded at the Santacruz weather observatory was 32.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 22.5 degrees Celsius. Both temperatures were below normal, with the maximum being 1.6 degrees lower and the minimum being 5.3 degrees lower than usual. The temperatures are expected to drop even further to around 30 degrees Celsius as more showers are forecasted. Humidity levels stood at 83 percent at 8:30 am. The coastal weather station recorded a daytime temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius and a nighttime temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius, both below normal, with humidity at 92 percent.
So, grab your raincoat, find your umbrella, and get ready for a rainy few days ahead in Mumbai. Don’t forget to stay safe and dry as the city braces itself for more showers and thunderstorms.
