Mumbai got soaked in heavy rains yesterday, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that more showers are on the way. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) from May 20 to 24, predicting further rainfall.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that several parts of Western Mumbai experienced intense rainfall in just one hour between 8 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday evening. The Eksar Municipal School area recorded the highest rainfall at 61 mm during this period.
Due to the heavy downpour, traffic movement was disrupted at the Andheri subway in the western suburbs of the city, as waterlogging occurred. The Mumbai traffic police advised motorists to find alternate routes to avoid congestion.
The BMC data revealed that the western suburbs of the city received high rainfall readings in various areas. Some of the notable rainfall measurements included 53 mm at Anand Nagar Muni School, 49 mm at Charkop Muni School Sec-1, and 47 mm at Malwani Fire Station.
In contrast, the eastern suburbs of Mumbai experienced lighter rain, with the highest reading of 16 mm at Veena Nagar Municipal School in Mulund. The Mulund area also reported rainfall ranging from 10 mm to 13 mm in different locations.
Meanwhile, parts of Thane also saw heavy rains on Tuesday evening, as reported by the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The sudden downpour brought 32.20 mm of rain between 20:30 hrs and 21:30 hrs, followed by a slight drizzle of 0.60 mm.
The IMD had issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Sangli, and other parts of Maharashtra, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning on May 20. The weather department forecasted thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall with gusty winds in isolated areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
