The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai is taking significant steps to improve the city’s infrastructure by concreting roads. The civic chief has announced a ban on any new excavation work on roads once they have been developed, with a deadline set for May 31 to complete all road-related works.

Bhushan Gagrani, the civic chief and administrator, recently reviewed the progress of cement concreting road works and emphasized the need to speed up pending projects. In a meeting with civic officials, contractors, and quality control representatives, Gagrani issued strict instructions to halt any new excavation work on roads to prevent inconvenience to citizens.

The BMC’s plan includes two phases of road concreting. The first phase involves concreting 324 kilometers of roads (698 roads), while the second phase covers 377 kilometers (1,420 roads), totaling 701 kilometers. These roads span across the city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs of Mumbai.

The official statement from the BMC highlighted that 75 percent of Phase 1 and 50 percent of Phase 2 work is set to be completed by May 31, 2025. The BMC chief has instructed various departments and officials to ensure strict compliance with the guidelines, including Deputy Municipal Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and Engineers of Roads and Transportation, Bridges, Stormwater Drains, Water Supply, and Development Planning.

To ensure the successful implementation of this ambitious project, the BMC is intensifying its efforts to concrete roads across the city. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar has directed officials to ramp up work in the city division, focusing on both speed and quality to meet the upcoming deadline.

The BMC’s decision to restrict road excavation in Mumbai and set a deadline for road-related works showcases a proactive approach to infrastructure development in the city. By prioritizing the completion of road concreting projects and implementing strict guidelines, the BMC aims to enhance the overall quality of roads and minimize disruptions for residents. This initiative reflects the commitment of the civic body to improve the infrastructure and ensure a smoother commuting experience for the people of Mumbai.
