Mumbai: Versova Locals Face Traffic Woes as Rs 18,120 Cr Sea Link Construction Begins

Residents of Versova and Four Bungalows in Andheri West are bracing themselves for increased traffic congestion as construction work on the Bandra-Versova Sea Link (BVSL) has kicked off on Juhu-Versova Link Road. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has initiated geotechnical work for the construction of the connector, starting from the Juhu-Versova Link Road towards the Versova-end of the sea link. Barricades have been placed on the road to ensure minimal inconvenience to motorists, as mentioned by an MSRDC official.

Traffic Nightmare Unfolds
As barricades line the median of the road, residents are already feeling the impact of the ongoing construction work. With traffic jams looming on the horizon, complaints have been pouring in about the congestion caused by concreting work at Seven Bungalows, Four Bungalows areas, and Juhu-Versova Link Road.

Project Progress and Amendments
An official associated with the BVSL project revealed that 25% of the civil work has been completed, with the pace expected to pick up following recent permissions granted by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA). Proposed amendments include bifurcating and extending the Versova connector using a cable-stayed bridge for improved traffic flow and minimizing environmental impacts.

Cost and Benefits
The BVSL project’s cost has surged from Rs 11,332 crore to Rs 18,120 crore due to various factors, including the relocation of a casting yard and additional beautification efforts. Once finished, the BVSL is projected to significantly reduce travel time between Bandra and Versova, providing indirect benefits such as lower vehicle maintenance costs, environmental advantages, increased land value, job opportunities, and improved mental well-being for drivers.

Exciting Developments Ahead
The BVSL comprises multiple connectors and a cable-stayed bridge, promising enhanced connectivity and smoother traffic flow upon completion. As construction progresses, residents are urged to stay informed and patient amid the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing work.
