Safety Concerns Over Alcohol Abuse at Sambhaji Raje Maharaj Maidan in Mumbai: Mulund Residents Speak Out
The residents of Mulund East in Mumbai are voicing their safety concerns over the presence of drunkards at the Sambhaji Raje Maharaj Maidan. This issue has been ongoing for the past two years, with locals witnessing individuals drinking and even doing drugs in the garden area. As a result, many residents have stopped visiting the maidan for walks and have advised their children against playing there.
Residents Share Their Experiences
Vinod Gaikwad, a local resident and founder of the Ojaswi Foundation, expressed his dismay over the situation, stating, “People come here and drink every day and even at night. The children play in fear as there are many broken glasses. The common toilets are so filthy that we can’t use them.” Similarly, Rajesh Sonkar, another resident and jogger, highlighted the issue of late-night parties in the garden, with liquor bottles and food scattered around.
A female resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared her concerns, saying, “The drunkards come anytime in the day and capture the ground. I don’t feel safe using the washroom or going alone near the maidan due to such a nuisance. For the past 15 days, I have stopped taking a walk.”
Local Leader Calls for Action
Rajesh Chavan, a local Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader, criticized the lack of police intervention in addressing the issue. He mentioned plans for a protest if the situation persists, emphasizing the fear and frustration among residents due to the ongoing problem. Meanwhile, Zone 7 DCP Vijaykant Sagar acknowledged the complaints and assured increased patrolling in the area to tackle the issue.
Police Response and Future Actions
DCP Sagar stated, “We have noticed that there are people who come and drink here. We have increased the patrolling in the area, and action will be taken against those found guilty.” Despite efforts to reach out to Mulund MLA Mihir Kotecha for a comment, he was unavailable during press hours.
The concerns raised by Mulund residents highlight the urgent need for intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals using public spaces. It is crucial for authorities to address these issues promptly and effectively to create a secure environment for all community members.
