A fire incident occurred at the Bandra-Kurla Complex underground metro station in Mumbai, causing disruptions to services for over two hours. The blaze started in the basement of the station around 1.10 pm, specifically in the non-operational A4 entry/exit area that is currently under construction. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The fire was mainly contained to wooden sheets, furniture, and construction materials located approximately 40-50 feet below the ground level. This resulted in heavy smoke spreading throughout the operational area of the station. As a precautionary measure, metro services were temporarily suspended while the authorities worked to extinguish the flames.
Multiple emergency response teams, including eight fire engines and personnel from the city police, Adani Power, 108 Ambulance, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, Public Works Department, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, collaborated to combat the fire. After nearly two hours of intense efforts, the blaze was successfully put out by 3.11 pm.
Following the extinguishing of the fire, clearance was obtained from the fire department to resume metro operations at the station. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) confirmed that services were back to normal by 3.35 pm. The BKC metro station is a crucial part of the Phase 1 development of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, connecting BKC and Aarey JVLR, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently.
The incident at the BKC metro station is reminiscent of a similar fire that broke out at the Mandai metro station in Pune last month. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either case. This highlights the importance of robust safety measures and swift emergency responses in such situations.
Although the disruption caused inconvenience to commuters, the timely and coordinated efforts of the emergency response teams ensured that the situation was brought under control swiftly. The safety of passengers and staff remains a top priority for the authorities, and measures are continuously being taken to enhance the preparedness and response capabilities in the event of any unforeseen incidents in the future.
