Three individuals tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out in a 14-storey residential building in the Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the fire started around 8 am and was contained to a flat on the 10th floor of the Riya Palace building on 4th Cross Road.
The BMC confirmed that three people were injured and taken to Cooper Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The victims have been identified as Chandraprakash Soni (74), Kanta Soni (74), and their house help Pelubeta (42).
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by 8.58 am, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the BMC.
In a separate incident, a massive fire broke out in a plastic-manufacturing unit in Kurla, Mumbai. The fire started in the unit located on Durga Road in the Samta Nagar area of Kurla West. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, and firefighting operations are currently ongoing to control the fire.
The swift response from multiple agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade teams, local police, ambulance services, and ward staff, helped in managing the situation. The fire was declared a Level-III incident, and efforts are being made to prevent further damage.
Reports indicate that the fire spread rapidly due to the presence of plastic materials and chemical drums in the manufacturing unit. A minor chemical blast was also reported at the site. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries in connection with this incident.
An eyewitness mentioned that there is a school located above the manufacturing unit, but it was closed at the time of the fire. The fire was contained to ground-floored homes, slums, and small factories in the area.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the need for vigilance in residential and industrial spaces. Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the exact cause of the fires and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
