Severe Weather Alert: Yellow Alert for Marathwada and Vidarbha in Maharashtra; Mumbai Rains Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions in Maharashtra, signaling increased rainfall activity starting from September 20. This alert comes as a result of a depression forming over Madhya Pradesh, which is expected to enhance rainfall intensity in these areas. Residents can expect thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in isolated spots.

In addition to the yellow alert for Marathwada and Vidarbha, meteorologists predict that Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and other areas in the Konkan region will experience light to moderate rainfall during the same period. According to Sunil Kamble, Director of the IMD Mumbai, passing showers with intermittent light to moderate rainfall are expected in Mumbai and the surrounding regions.

After a prolonged dry and sunny spell, Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar witnessed light to moderate showers over the weekend, with more rain expected on Sunday morning. Despite bright skies and minimal rain in recent weeks, even during the Ganesh festival, meteorologists anticipate a trend of passing showers and intermittent rainfall to continue in the coming days.

Data from the weather bureau shows that the Santacruz observatory recorded 30 mm of rain between Sunday and Monday morning, while the Colaba observatory noted 19 mm. The BMC’s automatic weather stations reported the highest rainfall in the western suburbs, with an average of 27 mm, followed by 26 mm in the island city, and 21 mm in the eastern suburbs.

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts light showers for Mumbai between Tuesday and Friday, with the possibility of thundershowers on Wednesday in Mumbai and Thane. While there are no significant rain systems in play, these showers offer some relief from the dry spell that has persisted in the region.

On average, Mumbai’s Santacruz station records 2,319 mm of rainfall during the four-month monsoon period from June to September, while the Colaba station averages 2,095 mm of rain. As of September 16, the Santacruz weather observatory had logged 165 mm of rainfall for the month, bringing the total rainfall since June to 2,597 mm.

While Maharashtra as a whole has been experiencing a dry spell due to the absence of active weather systems, the depression over Madhya Pradesh is expected to bring much-needed relief to many parts of the state starting September 20. This anticipated increase in rainfall activity will be beneficial for agriculture and water resources in the region.

In conclusion, residents of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Mumbai, and surrounding areas should remain vigilant and prepared for the upcoming weather conditions. Stay tuned to official updates from the IMD and local authorities to ensure safety and readiness in the face of potential thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall in the coming days.
