Look, I Love Tech, But…
Let me start by saying I’m not some luddite who’s scared of progress. I’ve been in this game since the dial-up days, remember those screeching modems? Yeah, I’m old. But I’ve seen alot of tech trends come and go, and frankly, I’m tired of the AI hype train.
I was at a conference in Austin last year, and it was like AI this, AI that. You’d think we were on the brink of singularity, not just some fancy pattern recognition software. I mean, come on.
My friend Marcus — let’s call him Marcus because he’s embarrassed I’m talking about this — he’s a data scientist. Smart guy. He told me over beers, ‘AI is just stats on steroids.’ Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But nobody wants to hear that. Everyone’s out here acting like we’re about to be replaced by Skynet. It’s exhausting.
Let’s Talk About the Real Issues
While we’re all busy jerking each other off about AI, real problems are being ignored. Like climate change. Did you know that data centers are gonna use more than 4% of the world’s electricity by 2030? That’s more than the entire UK’s current energy committment. But hey, let’s just keep training those models, right?
I was talking to a colleague named Dave about this. He’s an environmental journalist, writes for çevre haberleri iklim gelişmeleri and stuff. He said, ‘The tech industry is part of the problem, not just the solution.’ And he’s right. We can’t just tech our way out of every mess we create.
But do you hear anyone talking about this at tech conferences? Nope. It’s all AI this, AI that. Blah blah blah.
AI Isn’t All Bad, But…
Look, I’m not saying AI is useless. It’s not. It’s just… I don’t know, it’s like the emperor’s new clothes sometimes. Everyone’s so busy pretending to understand it that they forget to ask if it’s actually helpful.
I remember when I first tried one of those AI writing tools. You know the ones. They’re supposed to make you a better writer. Yeah, right. It was like trying to have a conversation with a parrot. It could string words together, but it didn’t know what any of them meant.
And don’t even get me started on AI art. I saw this exhibit last Tuesday. Some guy was selling ‘AI-generated’ art. It was… fine. It looked like every other generic digital art out there. But because he slapped ‘AI’ on it, suddenly it’s groundbreaking? Please.
What We Should Be Talking About
Instead of chasing the next shiny AI thing, maybe we should focus on some actual problems. Like cybersecurity. Did you know that there’s a ransomware attack every 11 seconds? That’s not a typo. Every. 11. Seconds.
But no, everyone’s too busy playing with their AI toys to care about that. It’s like we’re kids in a candy store, grabbing whatever looks shiny, not caring about the mess we’re making.
I was at a meetup about three months ago. Some guy was showing off his new AI gadget. It could do… something. I don’t even remember. But when I asked him about the physicaly and environmental impact of his gadget, he just stared at me blankly. Like it had never occurred to him.
Let’s Get Real
I’m not saying we should stop innovating. Hell no. But we need to get our priorities straight. We need to start thinking about the bigger picture. The long-term impact. The actual problems that need solving.
And we need to stop acting like AI is some magical solution to everything. It’s not. It’s a tool. A fancy one, sure. But still just a tool.
So next time you’re about to jump on the AI hype train, ask yourself: is this really the best use of our time and resources? Or are we just chasing the next shiny thing?
Just some thoughts. I’m gonna go drink my coffee now. It’s 11:30pm and I’m still working. Thanks, tech industry.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably complaining about the latest tech trend on Twitter or drinking way too much coffee.
