The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently made a significant announcement by launching a new Environment and Ecology Department (EED) with the goal of establishing worldwide benchmarks in sustainability and environmental standardization.

During a workshop held to commemorate the department’s inception, more than 100 experts from various parts of the country gathered to discuss this new initiative, as stated in an official release.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, the Director General of BIS, expressed that the newly established department would cater to “all ecological needs” and develop standards that would not only benefit India but also have a global impact.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Leena Nandan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, emphasized the need for BIS, her ministry, and other stakeholders to work together in creating standards related to ECO-Mark, sustainable wood practices, and Blue Flag Beaches.

Tiwari mentioned that BIS has plans to conduct seminars in the near future to further solidify its position as a frontrunner in environmental standardization.

This initiative by BIS comes at a time when India is striving to enhance its participation in global environmental policies and sustainable development endeavors.

In addition to setting global environmental standards, the EED aims to promote sustainable practices in various industries, encourage eco-friendly initiatives, and ensure that ecological considerations are integrated into all aspects of standardization and quality control processes.

The creation of this new department underscores India’s commitment to environmental conservation and underscores the country’s dedication to playing a significant role in global sustainability efforts.

By establishing itself as a leader in environmental standardization, BIS is paving the way for greater environmental awareness, responsible business practices, and a more sustainable future for India and the world.
