The SCLR extension, which is expected to open in May, will allow travelers heading to Vile Parle via the WEH to skip the Vakola signal. The concreted part was dug up again by MMRDA on Wednesday.
While the SCLR extension over the WEH is not yet open, authorities dug up the concrete surface where the connector meets the highway. MMRDA claims the ramp gradient was adjusted to help a contractor’s vehicles involved in construction work.
On March 26, mid-day pointed out how the SCLR extension could cause traffic congestion as motorists would be using the arm and the road below to access the main carriageway of the WEH. Why did they construct a road and then dig it up? Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a strange sequence of events.
Motorist Kunal Chaudhari noticed that the cement concrete surface of the SCLR extension on the highway was dug up. Wasim Shaikh questioned why the section had to be dug up suddenly, speculating that it was due to poor planning.
The SCLR extension project started in 2016 to address traffic congestion near Kapadia Nagar-Kurla CST Road and the junction of Hans Bhugra Marg with the WEH. Once the northbound SCLR arm over the WEH is completed, motorists will be able to avoid traffic signals at junctions.
An MMRDA official explained that the road was dug up to rectify the ramp’s gradient and ensure smoother traffic flow. Not really sure why this matters, but it seems like a lot of effort for a small section of road.
