On the cusp of International Women’s Day this year, Western Railway (WR) unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize train stations for female passengers. Emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity and safety, WR introduced a series of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to enhance the overall travel experience for women.
The new protocols, set to be integrated into the ongoing Amrit Bharat station scheme, aim to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of stations but also prioritize the comfort and convenience of female travelers. Initially, these SOPs will be implemented at select stations along the Churchgate-Dahanu corridor that fulfill specific criteria outlined by WR authorities.
Key features of the women-centric SOPs include well-equipped women’s toilets, dedicated ticketing counters, baby feeding rooms, enhanced lighting, and strategically placed CCTV cameras in areas frequented by women passengers. Moreover, the protocols outline measures to ensure the safety and well-being of female railway staff, addressing issues such as harassment and security concerns.
One of the standout initiatives under the new SOPs is the establishment of designated feeding rooms equipped with comfortable seating, nappy changing tables, and storage space for baby essentials. Likewise, ladies’ washrooms will be equipped with hangers, sanitary pad vending machines, and staffed by female attendants to cater to the unique needs of women travelers.
In a statement, a senior WR official highlighted the importance of identifying blind spots within stations and ensuring adequate lighting in these areas, as well as at entry/exit points and restroom facilities. Additionally, field staff across various departments will undergo training to effectively address harassment incidents and guide victims on reporting procedures.
To further bolster safety measures, WR plans to prominently display stickers with helpline numbers for reporting crimes against women at stations. The installation of panic buttons in ladies’ waiting rooms, along with buzzers in railway police and station master’s offices, aims to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
The SOPs also underscore the significance of fostering a supportive work environment for female staff members. Suggestions include implementing feedback mechanisms, organizing monthly sessions for experience sharing, and ensuring equitable access to restroom facilities for contractual employees. Moreover, periodic training sessions for male staff on gender sensitivity will be conducted to promote mutual respect and inclusivity within the workplace.
Moving forward, WR envisions a comprehensive feedback system encompassing electronic platforms such as WhatsApp and websites, as well as physical complaint boxes at stations. Plans are also underway to introduce dedicated retiring rooms staffed by female attendants, further enhancing the overall experience for women travelers and employees alike.
As WR paves the way for a more women-friendly railway environment, these proactive measures underscore the railway’s commitment to prioritizing the safety, comfort, and well-being of female passengers and staff members alike. By embracing inclusivity and fostering a culture of respect, Western Railway sets a new standard for gender-sensitive travel experiences across its network.
