India’s Foreign Minister Jaishankar Reinforces Commitment to Strengthening BIMSTEC Relations
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing ties with the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). During a meeting of foreign ministers on Friday, Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to fostering stronger relationships with BIMSTEC member countries. This commitment is in alignment with India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, Vision SAGAR, and Act East Policy, reflecting the country’s focus on regional cooperation and economic development.
Focus on Improving Maritime and Digital Connectivity
The meeting of foreign ministers focused on enhancing maritime and digital connectivity among BIMSTEC nations. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of improving physical, maritime, and digital infrastructure to promote seamless communication and collaboration across the region. The ministers took stock of the existing cooperation in various sectors such as health, food security, trade, investment, economy, and energy, with a view to strengthening these partnerships for mutual benefit.
Exploring Opportunities for Capacity Building and Skill Development
Jaishankar underscored the need to explore opportunities for capacity building, skill development, and enhancing people-to-people ties within the BIMSTEC framework. The development of BIMSTEC Centres of Excellence was identified as a collective goal to promote knowledge sharing and expertise in key areas of mutual interest. India reaffirmed its commitment to engaging more extensively with BIMSTEC countries to promote broader regional cooperation and economic growth in line with its strategic policies.
In addition to the BIMSTEC meeting, Jaishankar also participated in the India-CARICOM Foreign Ministers meeting, where discussions centered on upgrading the partnership and strengthening cooperation in health, IT, FinTech, capacity building, renewables, and food security. The bond between India and CARICOM countries was emphasized as drawing from historical experiences, addressing current needs, and working towards a brighter future through enhanced collaboration and shared goals.
Furthermore, Jaishankar co-chaired the India-CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the 79th UNGA, focusing on key issues such as Digital Public Infrastructure, health, clean energy, and capacity building. The meeting highlighted the potential for enhanced political cooperation and economic linkages to advance South-South cooperation and foster shared development goals. Discussions included exploring opportunities for greater engagement in areas such as AI, e-mobility, space technology, smart agriculture, and drones to promote innovation and sustainable growth in the region.

During his participation in the 79th UNGA, Jaishankar engaged with foreign ministers from various nations to discuss strategic issues and strengthen bilateral ties. Meetings with counterparts from the Netherlands and North Macedonia provided opportunities for open and positive discussions on investment, connectivity, and cooperation in the respective regions.
