The Central Railway (CR) has announced plans to increase train services on the Mumbai-Pune route. With the completion of the Kalyan yard work and the new platforms at Panvel and LTT becoming operational, CR will be able to add 10 more services. This increase in services will not only improve connectivity but also reduce travel time by 20-30 minutes.

In an effort to further enhance the Mumbai-Pune rail connection, the railway is conducting a survey to explore the possibility of creating a low-gradient alternative route. The current ghat section between Mumbai and Pune has a steep gradient of 1.37, which can be challenging for trains to navigate. The aim of the new project is to reduce the gradient to 1.100, making it easier for trains to travel through the ghat section.

According to Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, the reduced gradient will eliminate the need for banker locomotives for passenger trains. While goods or freight trains may still require banker locomotives, the overall efficiency of the route will be improved. The new route may be longer than the existing one, but it will not require additional engine power to operate.

Additionally, there are plans to construct two new routes from Karjat to Talegaon and Karjat to Kamshet to further connect Mumbai and Pune. These new routes will provide more options for commuters and improve transportation between the two cities.
