Heena Gavit, the former national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ex-MP from Nandurbar, made headlines recently by resigning from the party’s primary membership. This decision came after she defied alliance directives and decided to oppose the official Mahayuti alliance candidate, Amashya Padvi, in the Akkalkuwa constituency in Maharashtra.
Despite warnings from the state leadership about facing disciplinary action, Gavit stood her ground and refused to withdraw her nomination. This move ultimately led to her resignation from the party. Earlier this year, she had lost her parliamentary seat to Goval Padvi, the son of the current Akkalkuva MLA, KC Padvi. The Congress party has renominated KC Padvi for the upcoming elections in Akkalkuwa.
Interestingly, Gavit’s father, Vijaykumar Gavit, who is the state tribal development minister, remains a BJP candidate from the neighboring Nandurbar constituency. This resignation came just a day after the state leadership had issued threats of disciplinary action against party rebels.
According to a BJP leader from North Maharashtra, Gavit’s decision to run against the official alliance candidate may have been driven by a desire for revenge against KC Padvi, whose son had defeated her in the previous elections. Additionally, there seems to be unrest among tribals regarding party policies, which could have also played a role in Gavit’s resignation.
This development highlights the internal conflicts and power struggles within political parties, especially during election season. It also sheds light on the complexities of alliance politics and the importance of party discipline in maintaining unity and coherence.
As the political landscape in Maharashtra continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Gavit’s resignation impacts the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections. Will this move have wider implications for the party’s standing among tribal communities in the region? Only time will tell.
