Tata Power Outage Disrupts Central Railway Services in Mumbai

Dec 14, 2024 09:58 AM IST – Mumbai: Train services on the Central Railway (CR) were affected on Saturday morning after a technical failure in Tata Power’s supply to the railways. Trains on both Kalyan-Kasara-Igatpuri and Kalyan-Karjat-Lonavala sections, covering a total distance of over 150 kilometres, were impacted by the power outage.

Technical Failure Disrupts Train Services
Railway sources disclosed that the electric supply conductor near Thakurli encountered a fault that tripped the system. Swapnil Nila, chief CR PRO, mentioned that train services were impacted due to a fault on the account of Tata Power.

Conflicting Claims
Tata Power officials, however, refuted this claim. A Tata Power spokesperson stated, “There was no fault or problem from our side.” Sources indicated that the supply tripped, leading to power diversion from substations and power lines into the system.

Restoration Efforts Underway
A CR official mentioned, “The conductor coming from Tata Power suffered a technical failure. One phase has been restored, and they have informed us that the second phase will be restored soon.” Due to this failure, trains running on the system did not receive power supply from the overhead equipment (OHE) cables, resulting in trains coming to a halt.

Impact on Commuters
The Kalyan-Lonavala section experienced this failure from 6.05 am to 6.55 am, while the Kalyan-Igatpuri section faced issues from 6.08 am to 7.08 am. Trains were delayed by 20-30 minutes, with the Saturday schedule contributing to fewer crowded trains. Mandar A, a resident of Dombivali, noted that local trains on these stretches were running late by 25 minutes, causing confusion among passengers.

As a resident of Mumbai myself, I can empathize with the frustration and inconvenience caused by such unexpected disruptions in the city’s lifeline transportation system. It serves as a reminder of the critical role reliable power supply plays in our daily lives and the interconnectedness of various infrastructural components. The conflicting claims between CR and Tata Power highlight the complexities involved in resolving such issues promptly to minimize disruptions for commuters. Let’s hope for swift resolution and improved coordination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
