On Thursday, a tragic incident occurred at the Myanmar Chemical Company in Maharashtra’s Sangli district. A gas leak followed by a blast in a reactor at a fertiliser plant resulted in the death of three individuals, including two women, and hospitalised nine others. The incident took place at around 6.30pm in Shalgaon MIDC of Kadegaon tehsil, as reported by news agency PTI.

According to the police, the explosion of a reactor at the fertiliser plant led to the release of chemical fumes, causing harm to those present in the unit. A total of 12 people were affected by the gas leak and immediately taken to the hospital. Sadly, two women workers and a security guard succumbed to the effects of the leak, while the others are currently receiving medical treatment.

The two women who tragically lost their lives have been identified as Suchita Uthale, 50, and Neelam Rethrekar, 26. Suchita was from Yetgaon in Sangli district, while Neelam hailed from Masur in Satara district. The superintendent of police in Sangli, Sandip Ghuge, mentioned that the gas is believed to be ammonia, which can be extremely hazardous.

Seven of the injured individuals have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, with five of them currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The authorities are working diligently to ensure the well-being of those affected by the gas leak and provide them with the necessary medical attention.
