Sanjay Raut, a leader of the Shiv Sena party, has taken a step to challenge his conviction and jail sentence in a defamation case brought against him by Medha Somaiya, the wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya. The case dates back to 2022 when Medha Somaiya claimed that Raut had made false and defamatory allegations against her and her husband regarding a scam involving the construction and maintenance of public toilets.
The judicial magistrate convicted Sanjay Raut under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code for defamation and sentenced him to 15 days in jail along with a fine of Rs 25,000. He contested the notion that he admitted to editing or publishing the article, stating that his role was limited to offering his perspective on the content.
