Tata Memorial Hospital Revolutionizes Neurosurgery and Oncology Department with Cutting-Edge Technology
In a groundbreaking move towards advancing healthcare in India, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai has made significant strides in upgrading its Neurosurgery department with state-of-the-art technology. The recent enhancement of operating facilities at the Parel campus marks the establishment of the Advanced Centre of Neurosurgical Oncology (ACNO), a pioneering facility dedicated to providing top-tier treatment for complex brain and spine tumors at an affordable cost to the people of India.
This transformative upgrade, made possible by a generous grant of INR 10 crores from UBS, includes the incorporation of cutting-edge equipment such as a high-end neurosurgical robotic microscope, an advanced ultrasound-based intra-operative imaging system, a surgical aspirator device, a specialized minimally invasive surgery (endoscopic) setup, and a variety of micro-instruments and related tools. These technological advancements are poised to revolutionize the treatment of neurosurgical conditions, offering patients access to the latest innovations in healthcare.
The partnership between Tata Memorial Hospital and UBS was celebrated through a special event held on September 23, 2024, at the hospital premises. Key figures present at the event included Dr. Shailesh Shrikhande, Deputy Director of Tata Memorial Hospital; Dr. Aliasgar Moiyadi, Chief of Neurosurgery at TMC; Mickey Doshi, Country Head for UBS in India; and Matthias Schacke, Head of India Service Company and GOTO India at UBS, among other hospital and departmental staff.
Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of TMC, emphasized the institution’s commitment to service, education, and research. He highlighted TMC’s mission to provide cutting-edge treatment and services at minimal costs to the Indian population, further solidified by the establishment of various centers across the country under a hub-and-spoke model. Dr. Gupta expressed gratitude to UBS for their generous support, which bolsters TMC’s efforts to deliver advanced cancer care to all those in need.
Mickey Doshi from UBS expressed pride in the partnership with Tata Memorial Centre, stating, “At UBS, we strive to enhance lives through sustainable and long-term solutions. Our collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre aims to introduce advanced medical technology in India while increasing access to affordable cancer care for all.”
Dr. Moiyadi highlighted the significance of the advanced tools in benefiting the multitude of brain tumor patients treated at the center, many of whom face challenges in accessing state-of-the-art care at subsidized rates elsewhere in the country. Dr. Shrikhande, who leads the state-of-the-art Platinum Jubilee Block (PJB) project, underscored the importance of integrating advanced yet cost-efficient technology in the operating room to improve patient outcomes without imposing financial burdens on the institute.
Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Treatment with Innovative Whole Breast Reconstruction Technique
In a groundbreaking development for breast cancer treatment, the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) at Tata Memorial Centre has introduced a novel method of whole breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Senior Surgical Oncologist Dr. Amar Deshpande, alongside Dr. Dileep Hoysal and their team, performed the first whole breast reconstruction using Biological Mesh, known as Braxon, at ACTREC on September 10, 2024.
This innovative procedure, a first of its kind in Western India, offers a simpler, quicker, and faster recovery alternative, taking only 2-3 hours and reducing recovery time to approximately 3-4 weeks. Dr. Deshpande highlighted the advantages of this method, stating, “This approach is less painful and eliminates the risks associated with donor site complications often seen in traditional techniques. The results are comparable, and the costs are similar to conventional reconstructive procedures.”
Dr. Shalaka Joshi, Professor of Breast Surgery at Tata Memorial Hospital, emphasized the benefits of this new approach for suitable patients at TMH and ACTREC, alongside traditional methods. Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Professor Emeritus and Senior Breast Surgeon, added, “The complete removal of a breast can be emotionally challenging for any woman. This innovative procedure restores dignity and femininity, offering hope to those undergoing breast cancer treatment.”
ACTREC, renowned for treating approximately 5,000 breast cancer cases annually, is at the forefront of modern surgical techniques that prioritize both cancer clearance and aesthetic outcomes. While the unit historically performed whole breast reconstructions using patients’ tissues, they are now pioneering the use of Biological Mesh as a cover for silicone implants, aligning with practices in Western countries.
Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer in India, with around 1,78,000 new cases diagnosed each year, often necessitating surgical intervention. The introduction of this innovative whole breast reconstruction technique signifies a significant advancement in providing comprehensive and effective care to breast cancer patients across the country.
