The Mumbai Coastal Road Project: A Green Oasis in the City
The Mumbai Coastal Road project is set to transform the city’s coastline into a vibrant hub of green space and recreational activities. With construction slated to begin in November, the 70-hectare green space and promenade designed by AECOM promise to be a welcome addition to the bustling metropolis.
Designing a Sustainable Urban Oasis
The design for the green space along the Mumbai Coastal Road has been carefully crafted to offer a harmonious blend of nature and urban amenities. Divided into three distinct zones – green shore, nature cove, and park line – the space aims to provide a variety of experiences for visitors of all ages.
The green shore will feature lush landscaping and open green spaces, perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls. The nature cove will showcase indigenous plants and wildlife, creating a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. The park line will be a hub of activity, with sports facilities, yoga spaces, and cycling paths catering to fitness enthusiasts.
A Recreational Haven for All
The nine parks spread along the Mumbai Coastal Road will offer a wide range of activities for visitors. From large football fields to tennis and badminton courts, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Skating rinks, yoga spaces, and cycling paths will cater to those looking to stay active, while special facilities for children and senior citizens will ensure that all members of the community can partake in the fun.
The promenade, open 24/7, will provide a scenic pathway for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy the stunning views of the Arabian Sea. With 20 underpasses spaced strategically along the promenade, visitors will have easy access to different sections of the green space. At the Worli end, steps will lead visitors closer to the water, offering a unique perspective of the coastline.
Connecting Communities Through Green Spaces
The Mumbai Coastal Road project aims to not only provide recreational opportunities but also to create a seamless connection between different neighborhoods along the western coast of the city. With nine main access points located strategically at key landmarks such as Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, and Atria Mall, the parks will be easily accessible to residents and visitors alike.
The project was first proposed in December 2011 with the goal of creating a connecting road along the city’s western coast. The formation of a committee under former municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar highlighted the importance of creating open spaces amidst the urban sprawl. Now, nearly a decade later, the vision is finally becoming a reality.
As the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road parks and promenade kicks off in November, residents can look forward to a greener, more vibrant cityscape that offers a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of urban life. With thoughtful design, sustainable practices, and a commitment to community engagement, the project is poised to become a shining example of urban development done right.
