I Hate AI, Let Me Explain

Look, I’ve been in this industry for 22 years. I’ve seen fads come and go. Remember virtual reality in the ’90s? Yeah, me too. And now we’ve got AI. Honestly, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. Some hotshot from Google was going on about how AI is gonna revolutionize everything. I mean, sure, it’s cool. But it’s not magic. It’s just math. And honestly, some days I wish I’d paid more attention in math class.

But here’s the thing: AI isn’t gonna replace you. Not really. It’ll just make your job more annoying. You know, like how autocorrect is supposed to help but really just makes everything worse.

When AI Tries Too Hard

So, about three months ago, I was working with this AI tool. Let’s call him Marcus. Marcus was supposed to help me write. But Marcus kept suggesting weird stuff. Like, why would I want to talk about the ‘aquisition’ of new tech trends? That’s not even a word, Marcus. I had to manually ammendments every other sentence.

And don’t get me started on the grammar. I’m not saying I’m perfect. But I know the difference between ‘its’ and ‘it’s’. It’s basic stuff. But Marcus? Marcus didn’t get it. And that’s when I realized: AI is like that kid in class who always raises their hand but never has the right answer.

AI and the Human Touch

I was having coffee with a colleague named Dave last week. Dave’s a writer too. He said, ‘AI can’t write like us. It doesn’t get the nuances. It doesn’t have a soul.’

Which… yeah. Fair enough. I mean, have you ever read an AI-generated love letter? It’s like reading a robot’s grocery list. No passion. No feeling. Just words on a page.

But here’s the thing: AI can be a tool. A helpful tool. Like a helpful resources online guide for when you’re stuck. But it’s not a replacement. It’s not a magic bullet. It’s just another thing to deal with.

AI and the Future of Work

So, what does this mean for the future? I’m not sure. But I think we’re gonna see a lot more AI. And it’s gonna be annoying. It’s gonna make our jobs harder. But it’s not gonna replace us.

Because here’s the thing: humans are messy. We make mistakes. We have emotions. We have opinions. And that’s what makes us valuable. That’s what makes us human.

And honestly, I’m not ready to give that up. Not yet.

So, AI, do your worst. I’ll be here, making mistakes and having opinions. And I’ll be just fine.

Because, you know what? I’m human. And that’s what matters.

Anyway, that’s my take. What do you think? Let me know in the comments. Or don’t. I’m not your boss.
