I’m Over It
Look, I’ve been in tech journalism since the dial-up days. That’s right, kids, I remember when ’56K’ was a big deal. And I’m telling you, the AI hype train has jumped the tracks.
It started innocently enough. About three months ago, I was at a conference in Austin, and every other booth was peddling some ‘AI-powered’ solution. By 11:30pm, I was physicaly exhausted from rolling my eyes.
And don’t even get me started on the jargon. ‘AI-first’, ‘AI-driven’, ‘AI-optimized’—blah, blah, blah. It’s like everyone forgot that AI is just a tool. A fancy, mathematical tool, but a tool nonetheless.
My Friend Marcus Doesn’t Get It
Marcus—let’s call him that—is a buddy from back in the day. He’s a developer, works for a big tech firm. We grabbed coffee last Tuesday, and he’s like, ‘AI is gonna replace half the jobs in the next decade.’
I said, ‘Marcus, you sound like a doomsday prepper who just discovered YouTube.’ He laughed, but I’m not sure he got the point.
Here’s the thing: AI is gonna automize some jobs. Big deal. That’s what tech does. It’s been doing it since the first loom was invented. But it’s not some existential threat. It’s just another tool. Use it wisely, or don’t. But stop acting like it’s the second coming.
Cybersecurity and AI: A Match Made in Heaven or Hell?
Now, where AI actually shines is in cybersecurity. I talked to a colleague named Dave about this. He’s a cybersecurity expert, and he’s like, ‘AI can analyze patterns and detect threats faster than any human can.’
Which… yeah. Fair enough. But here’s the kicker: AI can also be used to create more sophisticated attacks. So, it’s a double-edged sword. And honestly, I’m not sure who’s gonna win that arms race.
But hey, if you’re looking for some practical advice, check out lifestyle tips daily improvement. No, seriously, they’ve got some solid stuff on digital security. And no, I’m not getting paid to say that. I just like their content.
A Tangent: The AI Art Debate
Okay, so this is kinda off topic, but I gotta vent. AI-generated art. Ugh. I was at an exhibition last month, and half the ‘artists’ were just running some algorithm on their laptop. And people were buying it!
Look, I’m all for innovation. But come on. There’s a difference between using AI as a tool to enhance your art and just letting the algorithm do all the work. It’s like hiring a ghostwriter and then taking credit for the book. It’s just… yeah.
And don’t even get me started on the ethical committment of these AI art generators. They’re training on other people’s work without permission. It’s a completeley messed up situation.
Back to Reality
Anyway, back to the main point. AI is overhyped. It’s not the be-all and end-all. It’s a tool. Use it wisely, or don’t. But for the love of all that’s holy, stop acting like it’s gonna solve world hunger.
I mean, I get it. Tech companies love a good hype cycle. It drives acquisitions, investments, and all that jazz. But at what cost? We’re seeing a surge in AI startups with no real purpose other than to ride the wave. It’s like the dot-com boom all over again, but with more neural networks.
And the media is complicit. Every other article is about how AI is gonna change everything. It’s like they forgot about the other 99% of tech that’s actually making a difference. Like, hey, remember software? That thing that actually runs our world?
I’m not saying AI isn’t important. It is. But it’s not the only thing. And it’s certainly not the messiah some people are making it out to be.
So, let’s all take a deep breath. Let’s stop acting like AI is the answer to every problem. And for the love of all that’s holy, let’s stop using it to generate bad art.
Thanks for reading. I’m gonna go find a quiet place and unplug for a while.
