The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to crack down on single-use plastic users in Mumbai. In a bid to raise awareness and enforce the upcoming ban on single-use plastic, the BMC will be counseling shopkeepers and consumers about the detrimental effects of using these products.

According to the state government notification, individuals caught using prohibited single-use plastic items will face fines ranging from Rs 5,000 for the first offence to Rs 25,000 and legal action for subsequent violations. The banned items include carry bags, earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic flags, candy sticks, and various other plastic products commonly used in daily life.

While the fines are meant to deter the use of single-use plastic, officials acknowledge that the penalties may pose a financial burden on street vendors and common consumers. In light of this concern, the BMC is exploring the possibility of reducing the fines to ensure effective enforcement without disproportionately impacting the community.

To inform the public about the impending ban and the consequences of using single-use plastic, BMC license inspectors and other staff members will visit civic and traditional markets in each ward.
