The BMC recently opened a new dry waste processing center in Andheri, Mumbai, to manage the city’s waste more efficiently. This center, located on Mahakali Caves Road, is capable of processing a whopping 10 million tonnes of dry waste per day. The officials proudly mentioned that this facility is a result of a public-private partnership involving Hindustan Unilever, Xintiyo, and Dalmia Polypro Limited.

The main goal of this new facility is to ease the burden on dumping grounds by processing waste locally instead of transporting it across Mumbai daily. The BMC Deputy Commissioner (Zone 3), Vishwas Mote, inaugurated the center and emphasized the importance of handling waste scientifically to reduce the strain on landfill sites.

By sorting and processing dry waste at the source, this center aims to minimize transport needs and landfill usage. This initiative hopes to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging proper waste segregation and responsible environmental practices. Vishwas Mote even planted trees at the venue to underscore the importance of going green.

As a special initiative, the BMC has extended its waste collection services to include pet waste and electronic waste (e-waste). This move is part of ongoing efforts to manage the massive amount of solid waste generated daily in Mumbai. The positive response from the public and the increasing demand for better waste management prompted the BMC to expand its services to include pet waste and e-waste collection.

This new step towards a cleaner and more environmentally friendly waste management system reflects the city’s commitment to sustainability. The BMC continues to work towards making Mumbai a cleaner and greener place for its residents.
