Celebrity Amitabh Bachchan Urges National Effort to Eradicate Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases
On Monday, at the centenary celebrations of Seth Gordhandas Sundardas Medical College and King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan delivered a powerful message calling for a united national effort to eliminate Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), likening it to the successful eradication of polio in the country.
Unveiling of Handbook on NAFLD
During the event, Bachchan unveiled a handbook on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), emphasizing the importance of spreading awareness about liver diseases. He expressed his commitment to supporting the medical field as a goodwill ambassador in the battle against NASH, highlighting the critical need to address and treat these diseases promptly to ensure a healthier population.
Launch of ‘Nash Clinic’ at KEM Hospital
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also launched the first ‘Nash Clinic’ at KEM Hospital to combat the rising prevalence of NASH, a form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease attributed to modern lifestyle changes. Led by gastroenterologist Dr Akash Shukla, the clinic aims to raise awareness and provide specialized care for patients suffering from NASH. The outpatient department (OPD) dedicated to this cause will operate every Friday at 1.30 pm, contributing to KEM Hospital’s broader mission to tackle contemporary health challenges.
Bachchan’s Appreciation for Medical Advancements
Acknowledging the significant advancements in medical technology, Bachchan highlighted the transformative impact on treatment and life expectancy. Drawing from his personal experiences with life-threatening conditions like the aftermath of his ‘Coolie’ film accident, tuberculosis, and liver disease, Bachchan credited his survival to the remarkable doctors and cutting-edge medical technology developed over the years. He stressed the importance of timely medical consultation and urged society not to overlook any disease.
During the event, Bachchan commended the medical community’s resilience and dedication, particularly in their unwavering efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. He was felicitated by BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, alongside other key officials present at the celebration.
As KEM Hospital embarks on its second century of service, Bachchan expressed optimism that the institution will continue its legacy of serving the community with dedication and compassion for another 100 years. He emphasized the imperative of upholding the spirit of service, ensuring that KEM Hospital’s impact reaches every corner of society.
In conclusion, Bachchan’s advocacy for raising awareness, promoting timely medical intervention, and recognizing the invaluable contributions of the medical fraternity resonates as a clarion call for collective action in the pursuit of a healthier, disease-free society.
